MUNICIPALITIES:

Families and businesses choose to settle, or stay, in a community because of that area's quality of life.  Healthy community forests are a sign of environmental quality.

Recent national surveys show that the health of community forests is declining.  City managers sometimes lack the skills to manage their tree population effectively.  SKA is working with communities, both big and small, to reverse this trend.

For example, an inventory of trees on public property in your community can provide an assessment of what management actions need to be taken to keep your trees healthy and vigorous.  Inventories also help establish accurate budgets for tree care and provide dollar values for the community forestry resource.

Did you know that many state conservation agencies have grant programs that will pay for a wide range of community forestry projects on public ground?  The primary purpose of the programs is to provide funds to create or provide significant improvements to a city's community forestry program.  Here are links to Missouri and Illinois web sites that contain information about their grant programs.
